Tom Kean Jr. Reappears at New Jersey Home After Months-Long Public Absence

WESTFIELD, N.J. — U.S. Rep. Tom Kean Jr. was seen at his New Jersey home this week after months away from public view, marking his first confirmed public appearance since an extended absence from Congress that prompted widespread speculation and questions from constituents.

Kean briefly greeted a reporter outside his Westfield residence but declined to discuss the circumstances surrounding his absence in detail. According to published accounts, he told the reporter he would speak publicly the following week before returning inside.

The Republican congressman, who represents New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, has not participated in House floor votes since early March after his office announced he was addressing a personal medical issue. While his staff has repeatedly said he is recovering and intends to return to work, few additional details have been released about his condition.

A senior adviser to Kean indicated that the congressman plans to provide a more complete public explanation upon his return to Washington, saying he intends to be transparent about the events that kept him away from Capitol Hill.

Kean’s prolonged absence drew increasing attention because of the number of congressional votes he missed and the limited public communication from his office. Political observers and constituents questioned how legislative responsibilities were being handled during his recovery, while House leadership confirmed the absence was related to a health matter rather than any misconduct.

Despite remaining out of public view for several months, Kean continued to seek reelection and secured the Republican nomination in New Jersey’s 7th District earlier this month.

His office has announced plans for him to resume congressional duties on June 30, ending one of the most closely watched unexplained absences by a sitting member of Congress in recent years.

As Kean prepares to return to Capitol Hill, attention is expected to focus on the explanation he has promised regarding his medical leave and how he plans to resume representing one of the nation’s most competitive congressional districts.
