FORT McMURRAY, Alberta — A major traffic collision on Highway 63 brought travel to a standstill Thursday morning after a multi-vehicle crash forced the temporary closure of the Peter Lougheed Bridge, commonly known by residents as the “Bridge to Nowhere.” The incident disrupted traffic along one of northern Alberta’s most important transportation corridors, causing significant delays for commuters, commercial drivers, and oil sands workers traveling between Fort McMurray and Edmonton.
According to Wood Buffalo RCMP, emergency crews responded to the collision shortly after 7:30 a.m. on June 25 after receiving reports of a crash on the Highway 63 bridge spanning the Athabasca River, approximately 50 kilometres north of Fort McMurray. Police confirmed that three vehicles were involved in the collision and that at least two people were transported to Fort McMurray’s Northern Lights Regional Health Centre for treatment. Authorities have not released information regarding the severity of their injuries.
The collision forced officials to close the bridge in both directions while firefighters, paramedics, police officers, and highway maintenance crews responded to the scene. Traffic quickly backed up on Highway 63, with motorists facing lengthy delays as emergency responders worked to assist those involved, clear damaged vehicles, and begin their investigation. The roadway remained closed for approximately three and a half hours before reopening around 11 a.m.
The Peter Lougheed Bridge has long been known locally as the “Bridge to Nowhere,” a nickname dating back to the years when the bridge stood completed without a connecting roadway on one side of the Athabasca River. Although the highway connection was eventually finished, the nickname has endured and remains widely recognized throughout northern Alberta. Today, the bridge forms a critical link on Highway 63, the primary route connecting Fort McMurray with Edmonton and serving thousands of commuters and commercial vehicles every day.
Authorities have not yet determined what caused Thursday’s collision. Investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the crash, including vehicle movements, roadway conditions, and other factors that may have contributed to the incident. No charges have been announced, and officials have not indicated whether weather or mechanical issues played any role.
The closure once again highlighted the importance of Highway 63 to northern Alberta. With few alternate routes available, even short-term disruptions can have widespread impacts on residents, industrial operations, emergency services, and commercial transportation throughout the region. Drivers were urged to avoid the area while emergency personnel remained on scene and to monitor official traffic updates before beginning their journeys.
