BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — Family, friends, and the Minnesota baseball community are mourning the passing of Pedro Antonio Oliva, who died on June 22, 2026, at the age of 56. Best known as the son of Minnesota Twins Hall of Famer Tony Oliva, Pedro is being remembered not only for his connection to one of baseball’s most celebrated families but also for his resilience, humor, deep love for his family, and determination in the face of lifelong adversity.
Born in 1970, Pedro grew up immersed in baseball, inspired by his father’s remarkable career with the Minnesota Twins. He displayed considerable promise as a young player and signed with the Twins organization, playing for the Elizabethton Twins. At just 18 years old, he hit seven home runs in 150 at-bats, an accomplishment that frequently invited comparisons to his father’s early success in professional baseball. Those comparisons never burdened Pedro; instead, he embraced them with pride and a characteristic sense of humor. Unfortunately, a serious knee injury brought his playing career to an early end before he had the opportunity to fulfill his potential on the professional stage.
Although baseball remained an important part of his identity, Pedro’s life extended far beyond the diamond. He faced significant physical health challenges and struggled for many years with addiction and untreated mental illness. Friends and relatives recalled that, despite those hardships, he maintained an extraordinary ability to laugh, often joking that he had “more lives than a cat.” Beneath that lighthearted outlook was a man whose perseverance inspired those closest to him and whose appreciation for the unwavering support of his loved ones never diminished.
Pedro also possessed a lifelong affection for animals, particularly dogs, and was known for his adventurous personality and curiosity. Family members fondly remembered his unconventional interests, from caring for unusual pets to sharing stories that reflected both his playful spirit and his unique perspective on life. His authenticity and sense of humor became defining qualities that endeared him to everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Above all, Pedro treasured his family. His home was filled with photographs of those he loved, serving as daily reminders of the relationships that remained the foundation of his life. He is survived by his parents, Tony and Gordette Oliva; his brothers, Damion and Ric; his sister, Anita; several nieces and nephews; his close friend Karol Gross; and numerous extended family members and lifelong friends who continue to celebrate his memory.
News of Pedro’s passing has prompted heartfelt condolences from throughout the Twin Cities and the broader baseball community. Many have reflected not only on his athletic promise but also on his resilience, generosity, and enduring faith. Visitation services are scheduled for July 2 at Washburn-McReavy Bloomington Chapel, followed by a second visitation and funeral service on July 3 at Park Avenue United Methodist Church in Minneapolis. Family and friends will gather to celebrate a life marked by perseverance, compassion, humor, and an unwavering love for family.
