Authorities are investigating a deadly shooting that unfolded Tuesday afternoon near the Berlin-Hudson town line in Massachusetts before escalating into a lengthy police standoff that shut down Interstate 495 in Lowell for several hours. The incident prompted a large multi-agency response and remains under active investigation by state and local law enforcement officials.
According to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, Berlin police officers responded at approximately 3:30 p.m. to Highland Commons shopping plaza after receiving reports of an assault in progress. While officers were en route, dispatchers received additional reports indicating that gunfire may have been involved. Upon arrival, officers found an adult man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the shopping plaza parking lot. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts by emergency responders, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said the shooting occurred at Highland Commons, a shopping plaza situated along the Berlin-Hudson town line. The area was quickly secured as detectives from the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police, Berlin Police Department, and Hudson Police Department began processing the crime scene. Officials stated there was no ongoing threat to the public in the shopping plaza area after the suspect fled.
Authorities said a witness who observed the shooting followed the suspect’s vehicle and provided critical information to law enforcement. Massachusetts State Police located the suspect’s pickup truck on Interstate 495 near mile marker 91 in Lowell, where troopers initiated a high-risk response that led to a prolonged standoff. Specialized units, including the State Police Special Tactical Operations Team (STOP Team), crisis negotiators, bomb squad personnel, drones, and a robotic device, were deployed as officers worked to resolve the situation safely.
During the standoff, both the northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 495 were closed, causing major traffic disruptions across the region. MassDOT diverted traffic while police maintained a secure perimeter around the suspect’s vehicle. After several hours, authorities determined the suspect had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the vehicle. Officials later confirmed that the suspect and the shooting victim were acquainted, though investigators have not publicly discussed a possible motive.
Neither the victim nor the suspect had been publicly identified at the time of the initial announcements, and investigators continue to work to determine the events leading up to the fatal shooting. Officials emphasized that the investigation remains in its early stages and that additional information will be released as evidence is reviewed and witness interviews continue.
Following the conclusion of the standoff, Massachusetts State Police announced that the public safety incident on Interstate 495 had ended and that all lanes of the highway had reopened to traffic. Authorities continue urging anyone with information relevant to the shooting to contact investigators as the case remains active.
