MANASSAS, Va. — Authorities have charged two teenagers in connection with the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Luis Angel Chavez, whose death earlier this month prompted an extensive homicide investigation by the Prince William County Police Department.

The shooting occurred on the night of Sunday, June 15, in the area of Peppertree Lane and Pebble Lane near the Bull Run Mobile Home Community in Manassas. According to investigators, officers were dispatched shortly before 10 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire in the neighborhood.

Police determined that Chavez was shot in the upper body before attempting to flee the scene. Investigators said he managed to make his way to the backyard of a residence on Parrish Lane, where responding officers located him. Emergency personnel immediately began lifesaving efforts, but Chavez died from his injuries at the scene. During the investigation, detectives also determined that multiple rounds struck a nearby home on Peppertree Lane.

Following a 10-day investigation, police announced the arrests of Markiss Alexander Medrano, 18, of Manassas, and a 16-year-old juvenile. Both have been charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Medrano is being held without bond at the Prince William County Adult Detention Center, while the juvenile suspect is being held at a juvenile detention facility.

Investigators have not disclosed a motive for the shooting or detailed the relationship between the suspects and Chavez. However, police previously indicated the incident did not appear to be random. Detectives continue to examine the circumstances leading up to the fatal encounter as the criminal case moves through the court system.

The death of Luis Angel Chavez has deeply affected the Manassas community, where family members, friends, and neighbors continue to mourn the loss of the young man.
