COLUMBIA, Md. — Family members, friends, neighbors, and community leaders across Columbia, Maryland, are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Emily Rieger, who passed away on Friday, June 26, 2026, following a courageous months-long battle with a rare autoimmune disease. Her death has deeply affected the Hickory Ridge and Swansfield communities, where she was widely recognized for her leadership, volunteerism, and unwavering commitment to bringing people together.
Emily was remembered as an exceptional community organizer whose passion for service touched countless lives throughout Howard County. Whether coordinating neighborhood celebrations, mentoring young leaders, or volunteering in local schools, she devoted herself to creating meaningful opportunities for families to connect and thrive. Friends described her as someone whose warmth, creativity, and selflessness transformed ordinary community events into lasting memories.
Professionally, Emily dedicated more than two decades to civic engagement and higher education. Holding a Bachelor of Arts from Western Michigan University and a Master of Social Work in Community Organization and Advocacy from the University of Michigan, she built a career focused on public service and student leadership. She previously led civic engagement initiatives at Emory University and later managed major service-learning programs at George Washington University, where she helped coordinate large volunteer efforts benefiting schools and nonprofit organizations. Most recently, she served as Special Event Coordinator for the Hickory Ridge Community Association, where she became the driving force behind many of the village’s signature events.
Outside of her professional accomplishments, Emily remained deeply involved in her local community. She served on the Swansfield Elementary PTA Board of Directors and volunteered as a Cub Scout troop leader, dedicating countless hours to supporting children and strengthening neighborhood connections. Emily is survived by her husband, Kurt Rieger, and their children. According to community organizers, the family had recently planned to relocate to Michigan before Emily’s illness worsened.
