The Chaptico, Maryland, community is mourning the tragic loss of Malik Javonn Somerville, who died at the age of 27 following a single-vehicle crash in Mechanicsville on Tuesday morning. His sudden passing has left family members, friends, and loved ones grieving as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
According to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, emergency personnel responded at approximately 7:40 a.m. on June 30 to the 27500 block of Thompson Corner Road in Mechanicsville after receiving reports of a serious single-vehicle crash. When first responders arrived, they found a green pickup truck that had left the roadway and crashed into a tree, with the driver trapped inside the vehicle.
Authorities identified the driver as Malik Javonn Somerville, 27, of Chaptico. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Somerville was pronounced dead at the scene. Due to the severity of the crash, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit assumed responsibility for the investigation.
Preliminary findings indicate that Somerville was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on Thompson Corner Road when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the roadway. Investigators said the truck struck a utility pole before colliding with a stand of trees. Officials noted that preliminary evidence suggests speed and driver error may have been contributing factors, though the investigation remains active and no final conclusions have been announced.
As news of Malik Somerville’s passing spread throughout Southern Maryland, heartfelt condolences began pouring in from members of the community. Family, friends, and acquaintances are remembering him as a beloved son, relative, and friend whose life ended far too soon.
