A shelter-in-place order in Forsyth County, Georgia, has been lifted after an hours-long law enforcement operation involving SWAT officers, K-9 units, drones, and multiple agencies culminated in the arrest of a suspect following a neighborhood manhunt. The incident prompted a significant emergency response, road closures, and heightened concern among residents before authorities announced the area was once again safe.
According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, when deputies responded to reports of gunfire in the area of Kelly Mill Road and Barrett Downs Drive. During the initial response, investigators learned that shots had been fired during a dispute between individuals known to one another. One nearby resident reported that bullets had entered a child’s bedroom, prompting authorities to issue an immediate shelter-in-place request for surrounding neighborhoods.
As deputies searched the area, investigators located a vehicle riddled with bullet holes and identified Jason Simmons as the suspected gunman. They also located Jason Treadwell, the alleged victim, who was arrested on unrelated outstanding warrants from Henry County. Authorities said the suspect was believed to be barricaded inside a residence on Kelly Mill Road, leading to the deployment of the Forsyth County SWAT Team, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team, and additional specialized resources.
Officers methodically cleared the residence, recovering a firearm believed to have been used during the shooting. However, Simmons was not inside, prompting authorities to expand the operation into a large-scale manhunt involving multiple agencies, K-9 teams, drones, and tactical personnel. Residents remained under shelter-in-place orders while law enforcement searched nearby neighborhoods and wooded areas.
The search came to an end at approximately 2:00 p.m., when a resident reported seeing movement in a nearby backyard. Responding K-9 teams quickly located Simmons, who was taken into custody without further incident. Sheriff Ron Freeman praised the coordinated efforts of the numerous agencies involved and stated that additional criminal charges against Simmons are expected beyond the initial aggravated assault charge.
Following the arrest, officials lifted the shelter-in-place order and reopened Kelly Mill Road, allowing residents to return to their normal routines. Authorities emphasized that there was no longer an active threat to the public while reminding anyone with additional information about the shooting to contact the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.
The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Detectives are reviewing evidence collected at the scene and interviewing witnesses to determine the full sequence of events that led to the gunfire, the SWAT deployment, and the subsequent manhunt. Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
