The Marion, North Carolina, community is mourning the loss of Bryan Derek “Big Funky” Wilson, a beloved husband, father, former Erskine College baseball player, and cherished friend, who passed away on June 27, 2026, at the age of 45. His passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of his family, friends, former teammates, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A native of Marion, North Carolina, Derek Wilson was widely known for his larger-than-life personality, unwavering kindness, and deep commitment to those around him. Affectionately nicknamed “Big Funky,” he earned the admiration of friends and teammates alike for his infectious spirit, sense of humor, and ability to make everyone feel welcome. Those qualities remained with him throughout his life and became a defining part of the legacy he leaves behind.
Wilson graduated from Erskine College in 2003, where he was a member of the school’s baseball team. His years as a student-athlete were marked by dedication, teamwork, and lasting friendships that extended well beyond the baseball field. Former teammates and members of the Erskine community continue to remember him not only for his athletic contributions but also for the encouragement and camaraderie he shared with everyone around him.
Beyond athletics, Derek was a devoted family man whose greatest joy came from spending time with those he loved. He is survived by his wife, Kristen Mabus Wilson; his twin daughters, Brantley Grace Wilson and Brynnley Faith Wilson; his parents, Bryan Wade and Joy Smith Wilson of Marion; and his sister, Alicia Dell Wilson of Wilmington, North Carolina. Family members say his unwavering love and dedication to them will remain his greatest legacy.
A member of Lake Bowen Baptist Church, Wilson was remembered as a man of faith whose compassion and generosity touched countless lives. Friends describe him as someone who was always willing to lend a helping hand, offer encouragement, or brighten someone’s day with his trademark smile and humor. His influence reached far beyond his family, extending into his church, community, and the many friendships he cultivated throughout his life.
As news of his passing spread, heartfelt tributes poured in from former classmates, baseball teammates, friends, and community members. Many reflected on the positive impact Derek had on their lives, remembering him as someone whose loyalty, authenticity, and uplifting personality made him unforgettable. His passing has united many in celebrating not only the life he lived but also the countless memories he created with those around him.
Visitation for Derek Wilson will be held on Thursday, July 2, from 2:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. at The Wood Mortuary in Greer, South Carolina, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 p.m. in The Wood Mortuary Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be made to Black Tie Boston Rescue or the Erskine College Baseball program in his honor.
Although Derek “Big Funky” Wilson’s passing has brought profound sorrow, his legacy of kindness, friendship, faith, and devotion to family will continue to inspire those who knew him. His memory will live on through the lives he touched, the friendships he built, and the love he shared so generously throughout his 45 years.
