Johanna Gregory Death

CHICAGO, Ill. — The Chicago community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Johanna H. Gregory, a 26-year-old pediatric occupational therapist whose life was tragically cut short in a late-night boating collision on Lake Michigan near Monroe Harbor, east of Navy Pier. The devastating crash left one person dead and several others seriously injured, prompting an extensive emergency response and an ongoing investigation by state and federal authorities.

The collision occurred shortly before midnight on Thursday, June 25, as two recreational boats were returning toward the downtown harbor area after spending the day on Lake Michigan. According to emergency officials, the vessels collided just outside the Monroe Harbor breakwall, leaving one boat heavily damaged and triggering a large-scale rescue involving the Chicago Fire Department, Chicago Police Department Marine Unit, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other first responders.

Gregory was among 14 people aboard the two boats involved in the collision. She sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after emergency crews brought victims ashore. Three other passengers remained in serious-to-critical condition following the crash, while another person was hospitalized in fair condition. Authorities said the remaining occupants declined medical treatment at the scene.

Gregory’s father, Douglas Gregory, described his daughter as “the sweetest human being,” saying she possessed “a heart of gold” and devoted her career to improving the lives of young children. As a pediatric occupational therapist, Johanna specialized in caring for infants and toddlers, working primarily with children between six months and four years old through early intervention programs. Her work focused on helping children overcome developmental challenges while providing guidance and encouragement to families during some of their most important years.

Former colleagues remembered Gregory as an exceptionally compassionate healthcare professional whose dedication extended far beyond clinical responsibilities. Those who worked alongside her praised her patience, clinical skill, and ability to build meaningful relationships with the children and families she served. Parents whose children benefited from her care frequently spoke of the confidence and progress they witnessed through her encouragement, expertise, and unwavering commitment to every child entrusted to her.

Outside of her profession, Johanna was remembered as someone whose warmth and generosity naturally drew people toward her. Friends described her as thoughtful, compassionate, and deeply devoted to those she loved. Her optimism, gentle spirit, and willingness to support others left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her, making her sudden passing all the more devastating for those closest to her.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has assumed responsibility for investigating the collision, with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard and local law enforcement agencies. Investigators continue examining the sequence of events that led to the crash, including vessel movements, navigation conditions, and other possible contributing factors. Officials have not announced whether alcohol, excessive speed, or criminal conduct played a role, and no charges have been filed as the investigation remains active.

Johanna Gregory’s passing has left an immeasurable void within both Chicago’s healthcare community and among the many families whose lives she touched through her work. While investigators continue seeking answers about the tragic collision, those who knew her are choosing to remember a remarkable young woman whose compassion, professional dedication, and generous heart created a legacy that will endure far beyond her years.
