TROY, Ohio — Family members, friends, and the Ansonia community are mourning the tragic loss of Yukahn Riffell, a 21-year-old resident of Ansonia, Ohio, who died following a motor vehicle crash on Interstate 75 in Miami County on Saturday evening.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 8:20 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 75, just north of State Route 41 in Troy. Authorities said Riffell was driving a Chevrolet Impala when the vehicle left its lane of travel, entered a closed construction zone, and struck the rear of a disabled Freightliner tractor-trailer that was parked on the right shoulder due to mechanical issues.
Investigators identified the driver of the tractor-trailer as Derek Blakely, 43, of Bethel. Troopers said Blakely had safely pulled the semi onto the shoulder outside the travel lanes several minutes before the crash after experiencing mechanical problems while traveling through the construction zone.
Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene, but Yukahn Riffell sustained catastrophic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Blakely was not injured in the collision, and authorities confirmed that no other injuries were reported.
The Piqua Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the fatal crash. As of the latest update, investigators have not determined why Riffell’s Chevrolet Impala left its lane of travel. Officials have also not indicated whether factors such as speed, impairment, distraction, fatigue, or another circumstance contributed to the collision.
Multiple emergency agencies assisted at the scene, including the Troy Police Department, Troy Fire and EMS, and Dick Lumpkin’s Towing, helping secure the area and support the ongoing investigation.
