PARIS, France — France remains under the grip of an exceptional heatwave as Météo-France warns that intense temperatures will continue across large parts of the country, with some regions expected to experience highs above 40°C and unusually warm nights that offer little relief. Officials have described the episode as one of the most severe early-summer heatwaves on record, prompting widespread weather alerts and public health warnings.
According to Météo-France, the current canicule began in mid-June and is expected to persist into the coming days, particularly across eastern and southeastern France. The national weather agency has placed numerous departments under orange and red vigilance as daytime temperatures continue to soar and overnight lows remain exceptionally high, increasing health risks for vulnerable populations.
Forecasts indicate temperatures ranging between 37°C and 40°C across many inland regions, with isolated locations exceeding 40°C. Several cities have already experienced record-breaking temperatures, including Strasbourg, which surpassed 40°C for the first time, while Paris has endured unusually hot nights with temperatures remaining above 26°C. Meteorologists say the combination of extreme daytime heat and persistently warm nights significantly increases the dangers associated with prolonged heat exposure.
The intense heat has also contributed to worsening drought conditions across much of the country. Météo-France reports that soil moisture levels in several regions are approaching historic lows, while vegetation has become increasingly dry, elevating the risk of wildfires. Fire danger remains especially high in southern France, where authorities continue to monitor conditions closely.
The ongoing heatwave has disrupted daily life throughout France. Authorities have implemented emergency measures including the closure or reduced operating hours of some public attractions, adjustments to school schedules, and increased monitoring of vulnerable individuals. Transport networks have also experienced disruptions as extreme temperatures place additional strain on infrastructure.
Health officials continue to urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day, seek air-conditioned or shaded environments whenever possible, and regularly check on elderly relatives, young children, and individuals with chronic medical conditions. The government has activated heatwave response plans to help reduce health risks during the prolonged episode.
Meteorologists expect conditions to gradually improve in some western regions as cooler Atlantic air advances eastward, bringing thunderstorms and a temporary drop in temperatures. However, southeastern France is forecast to remain exceptionally hot for several more days, with authorities continuing to monitor the evolving situation closely.
The current canicule is being compared to some of France’s most significant historical heatwaves, with experts noting that climate change is contributing to more frequent, longer-lasting, and more intense periods of extreme heat. Officials continue to encourage the public to monitor weather alerts and follow guidance issued by Météo-France and local authorities as the heatwave evolves.
